Berber Fabric
The term berber was used to describe the clumped fibers on carpets for homes. These carpets are often made of fibers that aren't safe for animals because of the plastics used and the fact that the yarns (fibers) are very long and can reach a meter or more in length. These factors make them very unsafe for dogs and their digestive systems. Then, in the early 1990's it was also used to describe a similar look that was used to create fabrics for clothes. Those fabrics also had the clumped fibers and looked like our version of the berber fabric, but the fibers are very short (1 -3 cm).

All the berber fabrics are made of synthetic polyester fibers and are put in large hot drying tumblers to create the clump or tumbled look. What we do with our berbers is start with a very strong backing of polyester yarn and then knit onto that the soft polyester pile that gives the fabric the plush softness. The fabric is then loaded into large tumblers where the heat slightly curls the tops and creates a clumped look. It is this type of construction and large number of stitches per centimeter that both create a very durable fabric.

Its durability helps keep the fibers from coming off easily so that dogs will not be as likely to ingest it. Should a dog ingest any of the fibers they would not present any danger, as the fibers are inert, not- toxic and will pass through the animal's digestive system, hence safe for pets.
