What is FOS?
Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are a group of prebiotics,non-digestible food ingredients that benefit the host by stimulating the growth of beneficial microflora (note: this is different than PRO-biotics, or the actual beneficial bacteria such as acidophilus and bifidum). FOS for the most part is indigestible and therefore acts as a non-digestible fibre in the diet. In human diet examples of a good source of FOS is onions and garlic.
When the FOS reaches the large intestine and the colon (for humans), the bacteria that are found there start to break down the FOS. These bacteria have the enzymes needed to break down FOS. Bifido bacteria have been reported to use FOS. It is believed that foods that promote bifido bacteria growth are good for the health.
What hay is used?
You don't see any indication of hay on the packing. It is stated Dried grass - a mix of species - in essence young meadow hay - cut before it has seeded. It is not hay - its young hay - harvested before the hay has seeded. It is therefore called dried grass. Grass is cut and then dried in an oven. In UK, Excel is classified under animal feed and therefore listing of ingredients is by categories instead of being specific.
Why is the fibre content so low?
Fibre content on the packing denotes crude fibre. Rabbits survive on a minimalist diet based on plant fibre. Long roughage, such as hay and grass is essential to the rabbit for healthy digestion. When you feed Excel to your rabbit, along with the above mentioned, the fibre intake increases to in excess of 20%, providing the correct level for your rabbits needs.
Indigestible fibre, which is very important to gut motility is present in Excel in PROFEED. The higher the fibre content, the better the gut will absorb the nutritional values of the diet. Excel is a complimentary diet. Excel recommends you give your pet a healthier diet by introducing hay, grass and greens along with your complementary supply of Supa Excel to provide sufficient indigestible fibre.
Why is there an oil content?
Soya Oil, a poly-unsaturated vegetable oil is sprayed (slight coating) on the pellets to hold the pellets well and prevent dust.
Other RecommendationsÂ…..
Besides 89% of vets in UK, The RSPCA recommends Excel in their booklet too.
