ARE YOU FEEDING YOUR RABBITS & GUINEA PIGS CORRECTLY?
| In order to improve awareness of the problems that rabbits/guinea pigs are suffering as a result of incorrect feeding we at Burgess have selected some checks that can go a long way to enhancing your pets life. |
 |
ARE YOUR RABBITS/GUINEA PIGS FEEDING SELECTIVELY?
Selecting foods especially from coarse mix may result in an unbalanced diet, high in starch, low in fibre and mineral content, especially calcium. This can be fatal.
ARE YOU FEEDING THEM ENOUGH FIBRE?
A rabbit/guinea pigs diet should contain 18-20% crude fibre of which large part should be indigestible fibre. Long roughage (hay) provides large amount of fibre, low calorie nutrition and at the same time prevents boredom. The high fibre content helps to prevent problems in the gut and the blockages that may occur.
ARE YOU LOOKING AFTER THEIR TEETH?
One key cause of dental disease is a shortage of long fibre in their diet. Long fibre helps to wear down its teeth, provides essential minerals and vitamins, preventing demineralisation of bones and teeth.
ARE THEY EATING THEIR OWN DROPPINGS?
Rabbits/guinea pigs eat their soft stool which carries valuable nutrients (caecotrophy), increasing their nutrient intake in the gut. Diet low in fibre and high in carbohydrate prevents this act and alters the consistency of caecotrophs so they are softer and stickier and are more likely to cake around the skin around the anus (Sticky Bottom Syndrome).
ARE YOUR PETS OBESE?
Selective feeding and feeding on treats, feeding on high starch content will cause the pet to become obese.
All these above factors will contribute to poor health and shorter life span of your pets in the long run. Give your pet a healthier diet by introducing hay, grass and greens along with your complementary supply of Supa
Excel.
